Leading in Emergence
Lona Leiren is partnering with Katharine Weinmann, both are local practitioners who have multi-sector experience in helping people and systems move forward through complex social change. We’re creating a local community of practice for multi-sector leaders to grow in their capacity for this challenging and necessary work.
We’ve studied with the pioneer developers and thought leaders of today’s current frames for working with emergent social change, including Peter Senge (The Fifth Discipline), Otto Scharmer (Theory U), Glenda Eoyang (Human Systems Dynamics), Adam Kahane (Social Labs), and the Art of Hosting global community.
We’re designing this learning lab as a journey down the “U”, where we invite you to share your experiences and stories, explore working frames, enhance competencies, and integrate insights into practice. We offer our perspectives on what we’ve learned and integrated from our own studies and application of supporting leaders in emergent change.
Policy For Breakfast
On February 28, 2013, the Government of Alberta released its Social Policy Framework. Over 31,000 Albertans participated in the development of the framework, and citizen expectations are high. Albertans have expressed hope that the Framework’s goals, strategic directions, vision, principles, priority actions and policy shifts will yield more collaborative and effective responses to Alberta’s most complex and pressing social challenges. They understand that no one sector can address Alberta’s most pervasive social issues; collaboration must be the cornerstone.
On December 11, 2013, the Building Families and Communities Act was also proclaimed. This Act put the Social Policy Framework “into action” by outlining a more strategic and integrated mechanism to solve social challenges. Recruitment is currently underway for the Family and Community Engagement Councils. This new approach will engage the perspectives of governments, business, nonprofits and families to collectively understand and co-create community-based solutions.
While the creation of the Councils has provided some clarity on implementation of the Social Policy Framework, many more questions remain. Alberta communities are waiting to see what this new approach will mean “on the ground” for transformation, innovation and collaboration in the delivery of social programs.
Organizations in all sectors face increasing pressures of public scrutiny and accountability, public expectations and new approaches to governance. Public respect, confidence and trust are critical to all 21st century organizations.
